One of the most amazing facets of gay culture is the shared experience of coming out. For each person, this emotional journey is unique. However, there is solace in an understanding that there are so many others in the world that overcame fears and questioning to find happiness on the other side.

This idea forms the core of Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign, which was launched in 2010 to inspire LGBT teenagers who feel bullied or outcast based on their sexual orientation. The campaign spread like wildfire, thanks to thousands of videos posted online of people of all sexual orientations talking about their experience.

To continue supporting this momentous campaign, the Gay + Lesbian Management Association (GLMA) here at Kellogg has launched an “It Gets Better” video, highlighting the perspectives of current students and administrators. While this group actively works to improve the professional, academic and social lives of LBGT students and allies at Kellogg, the video is a chance to communicate a message of hope and love to this group of young people.

My favorite line in the video comes from Dean Sally Blount, who is a fierce supporter of equal rights and diversity:

“To those of you who may watch this video who are on the journey to embracing, accepting and singing your true selves, just know that there’s a whole lot of people out there who love you, who respect you and want nothing more than for you to be truly the magnificent person you were born to be.”
