What we learned co-chairing Kellogg’s BMA Conference

As co-chairs of Kellogg’s Black Management Association Conference, our vision was to perpetuate the long-standing tradition and strength of the longest-running conference at Kellogg. It was our distinct goal to create a worthwhile conference that was forward thinking, would attract a diverse audience and would leave them inspired to be better leaders.

Understanding the importance of peer leadership, we set out to select a committed, highly motivated team that would help us fulfill this vision. From the planning phase to the day of the conference, we learned a tremendous amount through co-chairing such a significant event.

Meeting a record-breaking group of classmates

It’s a statistic that has floated around since orientation and pre-term, but I think it bears repeating: the Kellogg class of 2017 has a record percentage of female students, and at 43% of an incoming class of 492, those students are poised to make a big impact. I had a chance to feel this impact quite viscerally when I walked into the Allen Center a few weeks ago for the first annual Women’s Welcome Event hosted by the Women’s Business Association (WBA).

Kellogg welcomes the dynamic, diverse class of 2017

We are thrilled to welcome the Class of 2017 to campus today, and data from the incoming class of students indicates that Kellogg’s community is about to reach a new level of diversity and intellectual merit.

Within the Class of 2017, a record-breaking 43 percent of students are women — representing a 5 percent increase over last year (and a significant change from the 29% women when I was at Kellogg in 2003!). This class includes representation from more than 50 different citizenships and cultural backgrounds. At the same time, the average GMAT score of incoming students was 724, an all-time high. From all angles, this is a stellar class!

‘Embracing differences’ photo contest

To celebrate Kellogg MOSAIC week, the photography club arranged a photo contest during spring break focused on the theme, “Embracing Differences.” How Kellogg embraces its diversity and how its students immerse themselves in different cultures and places around the world inspired the theme.

This was the second year the club hosted the contest. We were looking forward to seeing the photos from everyone’s spring break experiences.

We divided the contest into two categories: DSLR submissions and Instagram photos with the hashtag “#KelloggMOSAIC.” We also added in another category for students who went on Global Immersion in Management (GIM) trips.

For this year, we were very fortunate to have great judges on board – Professor Julie Hennessy from Kellogg’s Marketing Department, Professor Zach Wise (a former award-winning interactive producer at The New York Times) from the Medill School of Journalism, Global Programs Associate Director Deborah Kraus and current student Jenni Yi ‘16. Each judge was selected to provide their insights on the pictures’ content, photography and diversity.
